Hale Mahinui is a place you will love to be. It is not just a place to spend the night, grab a bite to eat, and run out. If you are looking for a retreat, a place to come to where your spirit will vacation along with your body, this is it.
From the moment you drive through the gate, through the canopy of hapu'u toward the tikis, you will feel you are in a sanctuary. The sacredness of this land, and this forest, is something you can sense, as you would hear a piece of music, or smell a gardenia flower.
This is the sort of place you do not want to leave. Hale Mahinui is in Pele's rain forest. The name is from one of the daughters of the goddess Hina.
Furnishings include a library of books and movies to suit a variety of tastes. There is also a collection of CDs, including many of Hawaii's finest slack key and ukulele players, and Hawaiian chants.
The grounds are a full acre of native trees and ferns, augmented by dozens of orchids, anthuriums, bromeliads, and other Hawaiian tropicals. This part of Hawaii is relatively cool, with temperatures usually in the low 80s during the day, and falling into the 60s at night. In the cooler months, it can be quite chilly. There is a fireplace, and firewood.
The nearest beach is Punalu'u, a black sand beach that is a refuge for sea turtles. The house is most easily accessed from Hilo airport. Call for Availability.
